It started as a last-minute plan.
A friend texted on Thursday night. "Kudremukh this weekend?" By Friday evening we were on a bus from Bangalore.
Kudremukh sits inside one of Karnataka's most protected forest zones — the Kudremukh National Park. The name means "horse face" in Kannada, and if you squint at the peak from the right angle, you'll see why. The trek takes you through dense shola forests, wide open grasslands, and river crossings that will soak your shoes whether you like it or not.
The drive from Bangalore to Kudremukh village takes around 8–9 hours. Most people leave Friday night and reach early Saturday morning — enough time to rest before the trail.
We had our permits, timings, and logistics sorted from the Kudremukh Trek from Bangalore page on Backpackers United — it had everything laid out clearly, which saved us from the usual last-minute confusion.
The trail itself is roughly 20km return. It's not technical but it is demanding — the last 2km to the summit is steep and exposed. Start by 6am. Carry more water than you think you need.
What to pack:
- 3–4 litres of water minimum
- Rain jacket even in dry season
- Leech socks — non-negotiable
- Headlamp for early start
- Light snacks, no heavy meals on trail
The summit views are worth the mud, the leeches, and the sore legs the next day.
